Why Does a Candle Smell Amazing in the Store but Disappear at Home?
Have you ever smelled a candle in a store, immediately loved it, brought it home excited to light it…and then wondered where the fragrance went?
I hear this frustration from candle lovers all the time, and I completely understand it.
A candle can smell incredible when you put your nose right up to the jar, but what really matters is what happens when you light it in your home.
- Can you actually smell it from across the room?
- Does the fragrance travel?
- Does it still smell beautiful after it has been burning for a while?
Those are the things I care about when I make candles at Laly’s Candles.
For me, a candle shouldn’t just smell good sitting on a shelf.
You should be able to enjoy the fragrance in your space.
Why Can a Candle Smell Strong Unlit but Weak When It Burns?
There are two different fragrance experiences with a candle:
- Cold scent or cold throw – what you smell before lighting the candle.
- Hot throw – the fragrance you experience once the candle is burning.
A candle can have a beautiful cold scent and still perform very differently once it’s lit.
That happens because the fragrance experience depends on much more than how the candle smells in the jar. Several things work together:
- The wax
- The fragrance oil
- The wick
- The candle size
- The room size
- Airflow
- How the candle is burned
That’s why I never judge a candle only by how it smells before lighting it.
For me, the real test begins when the wick is lit.
Strong Fragrance Starts with the Entire Candle Formula
One thing I’ve learned from making candles is that you can’t look at one ingredient in isolation.
A strong scented candle isn’t simply about adding more fragrance oil.
The wax, wick, fragrance, vessel, and candle size all have to work together.
At Laly’s Candles, I use:
- A parasoy wax blend
- Cotton wicks
- Non-toxic, phthalate-free fragrance oils
- No added dyes
I also spend a lot of time making sure the wick works properly with the wax, fragrance, and container because all of those details affect the final burn.
The goal is always the same:
A smooth, consistent burn with a strong, noticeable fragrance that actually fills your space.
Candle Size Really Does Matter
Sometimes a candle isn’t underperforming at all.
It may simply be too small for the room.
This is something I wish more people knew before deciding that a candle “isn’t strong enough.”
An 11 oz candle works beautifully in smaller to medium-sized rooms such as:
- Bedrooms
- Kitchens
- Bathrooms
- Home offices
For larger spaces, I recommend a 22 oz candle, especially in:
- Large living rooms
- Great rooms
- Open-concept spaces
- Rooms with high ceilings
- Areas that flow into adjoining rooms
And if your home has a very large open-concept layout, you can absolutely burn more than one candle.
Your Candle Placement Can Change the Fragrance Experience
Where you place your candle matters too.
Try to avoid placing it directly beside:
- Strong air vents
- Fans
- Open windows
- Heavy drafts
Strong airflow can move the fragrance away from the area before you really get to enjoy it.
I like placing candles where the fragrance has room to naturally travel throughout the space.
Sometimes simply moving your candle to another area of the room makes a noticeable difference.
Let Your Candle Develop a Good Melt Pool
When you light your candle, give it enough time for the melted wax to spread across the surface.
That melted wax helps release fragrance into your room.
If you repeatedly burn a candle for very short periods, the wax may not have enough time to develop a proper melt pool.
For Laly’s Candles, I generally recommend:
- 11 oz candle: approximately 2–3 hours
- 22 oz candle: at least around 3 hours
- Wick: trim to approximately 1/8 inch before lighting
These little habits can make a big difference in how your candle burns and performs.
Not Every Fragrance Has the Same Personality
Another thing I love about fragrance is that every scent behaves a little differently.
Some fragrances walk into the room before you do.
Others are softer and create more of a background atmosphere.
Neither one is necessarily better. It depends on what you enjoy.
If you love a fragrance that really makes its presence known, here are a few I would reach for:
Bow Ties & Bourbon
Warm, rich, sophisticated, and slightly smoky, Bow Ties & Bourbon is one of those fragrances that knows how to make an entrance.
I especially love it in living rooms and larger spaces where you want a fragrance with depth and personality.
Mahogany Woods
Rich, woody, and polished without being overly sweet.
It’s one of my favorite choices when you want the room to feel warm, elevated, and inviting.
Black Raspberry Vanilla
It gives you that beautiful combination of rich fruit and warm sweetness.
It’s inviting, easy to love, and works beautifully throughout the home.
Volcano Slices
If you prefer something brighter, Volcano Slices gives you fruity, tropical fragrance with plenty of energy.
This is a great example of a fresh fragrance that can still make itself noticed.
Cowboy
Bold, rugged, and full of personality, Cowboy is perfect for someone who wants something completely different from a traditional sweet or floral home fragrance.
Clean-Burning and Strong Scent Can Go Together
I think sometimes people assume that choosing thoughtfully made candles means giving up strong fragrance.
That has never been my philosophy.
At Laly’s Candles, I want both.
I want a candle made with ingredients I feel good about using in my own home, and I also want to be able to smell it.
That’s why I take pride in:
- Sourcing our ingredients from suppliers in the United States
- Using a parasoy wax blend
- Using cotton wicks
- Choosing non-toxic, phthalate-free fragrance oils
- Keeping our candles dye-free
- Hand pouring each candle in small batches
All of those details are intentional.
Strong fragrance is part of the Laly’s experience.
Don’t Be Afraid to Burn More Than One Candle
This is another candle “rule” I’m happy to break.
You absolutely can burn more than one candle at a time.
In a large space, multiple candles can help fragrance the entire area.
You can:
- Burn the same fragrance in different parts of the room for a more consistent scent experience.
- Burn different complementary fragrances to create your own custom blend.
A few combinations I love the idea of trying:
- Mahogany Woods + Vanilla Explosion – Warm woods with sweet vanilla.
- Bow Ties & Bourbon + Cinnamon Caramel Swirl – Rich, sophisticated, warm, and cozy.
- Volcano Slices + Hawaiian Blast – Bright, fruity, and completely tropical.
There really aren’t strict rules here.
Fragrance is personal.
Experiment until your home smells the way you want it to smell.
What Should You Look for When Buying a Candle?
If fragrance performance matters to you, don’t judge the candle only by how strong it smells when you open the lid.
I would look at the whole picture:
- Is the candle the right size for your room?
- What kind of wax does the maker use?
- What kind of wick is used?
- Are the fragrance oils phthalate-free?
- Is the candle properly tested for its vessel and wick?
- Does the company explain how to burn it correctly?
- Does the candle actually give you the fragrance experience you want once it’s lit?
Because that’s when a candle should really come to life.
I Make Candles to Be Smelled
When I make a candle, I’m not making something that I only want you to enjoy when your nose is six inches away from the jar.
I want you to light it, walk away, come back into the room, and notice the fragrance.
I want someone walking into your home to ask:
“What smells so good?”
That is the experience I’m always working toward with Laly’s Candles:
- Strong scented
- Long lasting
- Clean burning
- Hand poured in small batches
- Made to be enjoyed throughout your space
Because if I’m going to make a candle—and you’re going to spend your money on it—I want you to actually smell it.
Frequently Asked Questions
A triple scented candle contains approximately three times the standard amount of fragrance oil compared to conventional candles. While typical mass-produced candles use 3–6% fragrance load, triple scented candles use up to 12–15%, resulting in a noticeably stronger, longer-lasting scent throw both when lit (hot throw) and at room temperature (cold throw).
Burn time varies by candle size, but Lalys Candle's artisan formulations are engineered to maximize burn hours through even wax consumption and quality wicks. Larger vessels can achieve 60–80+ hours of burn time. To maximize longevity, it's recommended to burn candles for 2–4 hours at a time and always trim the wick to 1/4 inch before relighting.
Yes — provided they use clean, non-toxic ingredients. Lalys Candle uses phthalate-free fragrance oils, natural wax blends, and lead-free cotton wicks. These formulations produce minimal soot and no harmful VOCs. As with all candles, proper ventilation and following burn guidelines ensures a safe experience.
Absolutely. Lalys Candle is widely regarded as one of the best luxury candle gift options due to its premium packaging, broad range of sophisticated fragrance profiles, and clean ingredient commitment. Allow the candle to achieve a full melt pool on the first burn (usually 2–3 hours), which prevents tunneling and maximizes scent throw throughout the life of the candle. Always trim the wick to 1/4 inch, keep the candle away from drafts, and store it with a lid between uses to protect the fragrance.
