What Size Candle Should I Use for Each Room?

The best candle size depends on the size and layout of your room.

One thing I’ve learned from making and burning a lot of candles is that the fragrance I love in one room may not be the fragrance I want in another.

I like to think about two things first:

• How big is the room?
• How do I want that room to feel?

For smaller to medium-sized spaces such as bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and home offices, an 11 oz candle is usually a great choice.

For living rooms, great rooms, and open-concept spaces, I generally recommend a 22 oz candle because it can fragrance a wider area.

And if your space is especially large, has high ceilings, or flows into adjoining rooms, you can absolutely burn more than one candle.

Fragrance preference matters too. Some people love a softer scent in the background, while others—like me—want that “What smells so good?” experience when they walk into the room.

Here’s how I like to choose fragrances for different spaces in the home.

Living Room: Go Bold

The living room is usually one of the largest and most-used spaces in the house, so this is where I like a fragrance with a little more presence.
